A Colorado Springs patrol officer arrested a robbery suspect early Wednesday morning after he turned a corner outside a convenience store and came face to face with an armed man wearing a mask.
The masked man bolted, but the officer quickly ran him down and nabbed him, according to a Colorado Springs police report.
Johne Newell was arrested for investigation of armed robbery, according to the report.
The serendipitous police encounter was not the result of an emergency call, according to a police report.
It happened at 12:31 a.m. at a convenience store on the 2800 block of East Fountain Boulevard, according to the police report.
An officer was turning the corner of the store when a disguised man found himself looking at a uniformed patrol officer.
Newell had allegedly stolen an “undisclosed amount of money” and was fleeing from the store. He immediately recognized his predicament and ran away from the officer, but he wasn’t fast enough to escape.
