Boulder to fine residents and businesses who fail to bear-proof trash cans

Starting Wednesday, all Boulder residences and businesses west of Broadway from the city’s southern limits up to Sumac Avenue will be required to have — and properly use — bear-resistant trash containers.

In 2014, the City Council approved a Bear Protection Ordinance, with a phased approach that initially required property owners west of Broadway between Dartmouth and Hawthorn avenues. The mandate that goes into effect Wednesday marks the start of phase 2.

Code compliance officers “will not be giving warnings,” a news release from the city said. Any property owner or business in the phase 2 area will be subject to a $250 first-time fine, graduating to $500 and $1,000 for subsequent offenses.
