Interview with Monique Madison, co-owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I realized, after traveling in Europe and only having a few days in each city, that the only way to get around and see it all would be on a bicycle. It didn’t even occur to me that a bike tour might be available, but after returning to the states and doing a lot of soul searching, I decided to follow my passion and turn my love for biking and gift of gab into a viable business.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We offer a city and public arts tour and a bike and brew tour. Also, our tours go out numerous times a day in the morning and afternoon, and we’re even trying out a twilight tour for the summer months.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: Being outside first and foremost, and the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and show them what a great city Denver is. Also, every tour is different. Unexpected and interesting things crop up every day. We have to make adjustments for the weather, re-route the tour for a public event that we didn’t anticipate, deal with a flat tire, etc. We’ve got to be able to handle what life throws at us and go with it, and still come out looking like pros.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Coordinating guides for last-minute bookings. In the summertime, we get a lot of phone calls for last-minute tours. We like to keep our groups small for a more personal experience but some mornings we’ll have people calling to jump on a tour that starts in an hour and it’s already full. This year, we’ve got more tour guides on hand and will be ready for these last-minute bookings.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Our bicycle tours operate year round! With more than 300 days of sunshine and plenty of balmy 60-degree days during the winter months, there is always an opportunity to explore Denver by bike!
