Two people were charged by moose in far , and wildlife officials see that as a reminder for outdoors enthusiasts to be cautious around the majestic creatures.

“This is the time of year that snow is going away and people are getting out there and hiking the high country trails,” said Larry Rogstad, area wildlife manager for Colorado Parks & Wildlife. “We’ve got moose with calves, and at this time, they are extremely protective of their calves.”

The two incidents were reported by Georgia Doyle, a biologist with the Fort Collins-based Colorado Natural Heritage Program who was in the Woodland Lake Trail area west of Eldora doing amphibian surveys.

Doyle reported that she was charged by a cow moose along the Woodland Lake Trail at about 9,680 feet.

“I was waiting there for her to wander off, but then she started charging me,” Doyle recounted.

Following her own episode, Doyle said that a short time later she encountered a Nederland woman who told her she had been charged by a yearling male moose not long before. That woman, too, had sought refuge behind a tree.

“She said she came on him around the corner, and he immediately charged her,” Doyle said. “So that was surprising, to hear that it happened twice on the same day, on the same trail.

Neither Doyle, nor the second woman, were harmed in their Tuesday encounters.
