A former bookkeeper faces felony theft charges after the Steamboat Springs nonprofit reported more than $27,000 had been stolen.

Leslee Anne Boynewicz, 50, was arrested Sunday on two counts of felony theft after a judge signed off on an arrest warrant.

Boynewicz did not respond to a message seeking comment Wednesday.

On May 13, Hot Springs Executive Director Pat Carney contacted the Steamboat Springs Police Department to report check fraud.

Carney told police the Hot Springs had discovered two checks that had been cashed at Wells Fargo with “pay to the order of Leslee Hendershot” written on the back, according to the arrest warrant.

Hot Springs personnel reviewed the books and on May 26 reported multiple other instances of money and checks forged by Boynewicz, the warrant states. More than $23,000 was reported stolen during a three-month period ending in January
