A cool front from the north will give Denver a temporary reprieve Monday after near record heat on Father’s Day, but the drop in temperature will be short-lived.

The high temperature of about 83 on Monday is 14 degrees lower than the 97 Denver experienced Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. The Sunday high was only one degree lower than the record set in 1989.

On Tuesday, the high is expected to be right back near a record at 98 degrees, which is 1 degree lower than the high of 99 degrees set in 2007, said Eric Thaler, meteorologist for the NWS.

There is a 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. on Monday in the Denver metro area.

The summer solstice is at 4:34 p.m., the longest day of the year, with sunshine for 14 hours and 59 minutes.

On Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny, hot and breezy. Winds out of the southwest will be from 9 to 11 mph and gust up to 28 mph, according to the NWS.

A gradual cooling trend is expected for the next few days, with a high of 90 on Wednesday and 89 on Thursday.

There is a slight chance of afternoon and evening rain and thunderstorms Thursday through Saturday, according to the NWS.

On Friday, the high is expected to be 91. The highs for the weekend will be back in the 80s, with a high of 87 on Saturday and 86 on Sunday.
