The temperature is expected to climb to 96 degrees Tuesday in the Denver metro area, but a few showers and a cold front will cool things off a bit in the late afternoon and evening.
It will be sunny with a 10 percent chance of afternoon rain and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

The record high temperature for Denver was 99 degrees in 2007, said Lisa Kriederman, meteorologist for the NWS in Boulder.
“There is a small chance we’ll break it, but it looks like we’ll be a few degrees short,” Kriederman said early Tuesday morning.
Winds will pick up in the afternoon with gusts in the 21 mph range. The low temperature is expected to drop to the lower 60s through the week.
With a cold front moving into the state Tuesday night, it won’t be nearly as warm Wednesday, Kriederman said.
A brisk north wind gusting up to 21 mph, will drop the high temperature by 12 degrees to about 84. There is a 10 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in the evening.
There is a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon Thursday. The high will rise to about 88 degrees.
There is a slight chance of afternoon rain and thunderstorms Friday and Saturday.
Under mostly sunny skies Friday, the temperature will rise to around 92 degrees. Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a high of about 85 degrees, according to the NWS.
It will be mostly sunny Sunday and Monday, with high temperatures of 85 on Sunday and 88 on Monday, according to the NWS.
