Seagate begins cutting 1,600 jobs, some possibly in Longmont

Computer storage maker still reorganizing

Seagate Technology on Wednesday said that it has , or 3 percent of its global workforce, according to a securities filing by the Cupertino, Calif. storage firm.

An unknown number of workers are in Seagate’s design facility in Longmont, but spokeswoman Cindy Martini said she could not confirm if any jobs were impacted. However, she said Seagate has 1,600 employees in Colorado.

Martini also pointed to the company’s securities filing announcing the job cuts. The layoffs are part of “previously announced efforts to reduce its cost structure,” it read. The restructuring is expected to wrap up by the end of September, and Seagate plans to take a $62 million charge to cover employee termination costs.

Seagate has struggled to grow as demand for enterprise storage and desktop products have declined, especially in China, according to .

Revenues are  from a year ago to $2.6 billion during its most recent quarter, ended April 1. At the same time, it also reported a loss of $21 million, from the year-ago net income of $291 million. Seagate’s CEO Steve Luczo said “results fell short of our expectations.”

Last September, Seagate  in Longmont. The 70 jobs made up 5 percent of its 1,400-employee workforce in Colorado. The Longmont employees worked in the design center, which is one of two nationwide. The other is in Minnesota.

A month later, Seagate . in Longmont. The storage software firm employed 260 at the time.
