A Florida man was killed earlier this year when his Tesla Model S car, which was in self-driving mode, failed to brake when a tractor-trailed in front of it slowed to make a turn.
It is the first known fatal accident involving a vehicle being driven by itself.
The accident has raised questions about the safety of self-driving cars, which are under development by several companies, including Google and G.M.
