Authorities have identified the man killed Monday when a single-engine experimental plane just north of the Central Colorado Regional Airport in Buena Vista.

Jay Jones, 63, from Buena Vista died in the crash, according to Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze. He was the only person aboard.

Officials first received reports about a crash around 12:15 p.m. Monday, and witnesses told officials they heard the aircraftap engine sputtering before the the plane went down, Spezze said.

The cause of the crash hasn’t been determined, and the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will investigate.
