A hiker was airlifted from a peak near Aspen on Wednesday after falling about 10 feet off a ledge near the mountain’s summit.

Piktin County authorities, who were called about the fall, said the hiker had a deep cut to his wrist that caused severe bleeding. While he was able to walk, officials say the bleeding was severe enough that he needed extrication.

The county sheriff’s office says the hiker was on K2 peak, next to Capitol Peak, in the Elk Mountains.

A Blackhawk helicopter from the High Altitude Aviation Training Site in Gypsum responded, along with Aspen rescue crews. The hiker was taken to Aspen’s airport, where a waiting ambulance took him to Aspen Valley Hospital.

Details on his condition were not released.
