Aspen police are poking fun at whomever left a small bag with a “white powdery substance” Tuesday on a self-checkout scanner at a grocery store.
“We’re pretty sure they didn’t buy this at the grocery store,” police said in a that included a video of the forgotten goods.
Bill Linn, assistant police chief, said Thursday the bag was found by a patron at the store and had been left behind by the person who had just checked out.
“By the time we got around to getting over there, there wasn’t anything to collect,” Linn said.
Linn stopped short of saying there were drugs in the baggie but suggested that was likely the case.
“We don’t know,” he said. “We suspect that’s probably what it was, and that’s certainly not the way that baby powder is packaged.”
Authorities declined to name the grocery store where the package was found. Police say they are not investigating.
“Really, the point of it was it was just kind of a funny, quirky thing and we were kind of taking advantage of the moment to laugh at what you wouldn’t normally see at a grocery store,” Linn said.
The Facebook post added: “Now we really try to take care of lost and found property like it is our own, putting a lot of effort into returning iPhones, wallets, passports, etc. But, if this is your property, we’re going to leave it up to you to come and collect it.”
