Colorado Springs resident Kara Winger, the 30-year old American record holder in the javelin, will attempt to make her third Olympic team in the event. … East High School graduate David Oliver, the 2008 bronze medalist in Beijing and 2013 world champion in the 110 meter hurdles, will continue with the semi-final round after winning his heat and finishing ninth in qualifying. He finished fifth here in 2012 and did not make the London Olympic team. He won this event last year at the U.S. outdoor championships and is the second-fastest athlete in the world at the event this year with a time of 13.09 seconds. The final will be soon after the semis … Former Wheat Ridge Farmer Annie Kunz, who won six state titles in track while also playing soccer, will compete in the women’s heptathlon in her first Olympic Trials. She graduated this spring from Texas A&M and is aiming to finish top five … In the men’s 5,000, former Columbine runner William Kincaid, now living in Portland, Ore., will race after posting the fastest semi-final time in 13:47.86. Kincaid was after securing the 5A crown in 2010. Also in the race will be Galen Rupp, who will be trying to make the Olympic team in his third event, having qualified in the marathon in February and the 10K in this meet last week. Bernard Lagat will be attempting to make his fifth and likely final Olympic team. … In the men’s 200 meters, LaShawn Merritt will continue his effort to qualify in the event, whee he has the fastest time in the world this year. He has already qualified in the 400, his speciality. Merritt still hasn’t decided whether he will try the double in Rio if he qualifies. Former American sprinter Michael Johnson is the only runner to have won gold in both, in Atlanta in 1996. Justin Gatlin, who has already qualified in the 100, is also vying for a spot along with Tyson Gay, who has his last shot to make Team USA, having failed to qualify in the 100.
