Scattered thunderstorms have begun forming over the foothills west of Denver on Friday afternoon and are expected to head east over the plains as the day continues.
A flash flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Boulder about 2 p.m. for the High Park fire burn scar in central Larimer County. It remains in effect until 4:15 p.m.
“The main threat from storms (Friday) will be wind gusts up to 45 mph,” the weather service said in a forecast bulletin. “A few of the storms on the Eastern Plains could also produce localized heavy rainfall, but the threat of flooding is low.”
In Denver, temperatures are expected to top out near 95 degrees on Friday. There is a slight, 20 percent chance of thunderstorms in the city.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible on Saturday and Sunday, with the main threat from those being local heavy rainfall, lightning, small hail and gusty winds.
“A cool front on Saturday will push most of the activity over the southern half of the (Denver area),” the bulletin said. “Moisture will increase Sunday in upslope flow to bring an increase in storm coverage and precipitation across the plains.”
Denver’s high temperature on Saturday is forecast to be 95 degrees and 88 degrees on Sunday.
