Denver prosecutors have formally charged a man with two counts of first-degree murder in a Montbello home.

, a 27-year-old parolee, is also accused of one count of violating a protection order, Denver’s District Attorney’s Office said.

Maira Cordero-Cuesta, 26, and Raquel Cordero-Cuesta, 45, died of “sharp force injuries” early Friday at a home on the 5500 block of North Revere Street. Chavez was arrested later that day nearby.

Investigators say he had blood spattered on his shorts when officers found him.

Police theorized in an arrest warrant that Chavez was attacking the younger woman when her mother heard the commotion, came to help and was killed as well.

According to the warrant, Chavez and Maira Cordero-Cuesta had two children together and a well-documented history of domestic trouble. On the day of the killing, investigators believe she was heading to meet another man and break up with Chavez, which possibly enraged him.

Chavez was recently released from prison on a 2007 conviction of a child-abuse charge, investigators found. The warrant indicated the victim in that case was a child he had with Maira Cordero-Cuesta.
