A Cherry Hills Village home that once served as a Japanese consulate is on the market for $4.2 million.
The two-story, 14,400-square-foot postmodern residence most recently served as the home and office of Joe Durnford, , an investment banking firm. The house was built in 1976 by MDC Holdings CEO Larry Mizel for his own private residence and then served as the consulate residence from 1998 to 2011, Durnford said. Durnford renovated the home after he bought it in 2012.
The 1.11-acre property at 9 Sedgwick Drive in the Devonshire Heights neighborhood offers six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. Itap just a 2-mile drive from former Broncos coach . (And closer than that, as the crow flies. Durnford said if he were a better golfer, he could hit it with a driver. He could practice at the Wellshire Golf Course, just across East Hampden Avenue from the neighborhood.)
The mansion features a saltwater pool, heated commodes (), a 10-kilowatt solar array, a five-car garage and a separate pool house for guests, among other luxury amenities.
The renovation converted the home into a more energy-efficient property but preserved much of its ’70s-swank character, including a built-in bed, hidden rooms and an oval-coffered ceiling. More than 500 LED bulbs inside and synthetic turf outside bring the home into the current millennium.
Homeowner’s association dues are $1,100 per year. In 2015, taxes were reported at $18,957, . Sales history shows the property was last sold in March 2012 for $1 million.
Durnford said the move reflects a change in his personal circumstances. Although he does business “all over the country,” he said he plans to stay in the Denver area.
If you’re looking for something slightly less grandiose, is still on the market.
