BOULDER— As the only player on the field wearing a green jersey, it was easy to spot Tony Julmisse during Colorado’s scrimmage Saturday at Folsom Field.
It was Julmisse’s performance that really stood out, however.
The freshman from Plantation, Fla., has been playing wide receiver and cornerback in preseason camp and he shined on both sides of the field Saturday. Julmisse caught an 83-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Jordan Gehrke for what was, by far, the longest play of the day. He also made good plays on defense.
“He’s definitely an athlete we’re going to find a way to get on the field at times, there’s no doubt, and especially as the year goes along,” said Buffaloes coach Mike MacIntyre.
Where Julmisse plays remains to be seen, but it appears he will practice on both sides of the ball for the foreseeable future.
“We’re going to keep using him both ways for a while,” MacIntyre said. “We’ll decide which side he’ll emphasize on, and I think we’ll probably keep him on the other side and still practice him there in case we have some injuries. We haven’t made our mind up on that yet. As you can tell, itap hard to because he makes plays on both sides of the ball. We just have to figure out where he’ll play the most.”
Saturday provided good and bad moments for both the offense and defense. In general, however, MacIntyre was pleased with how the Buffs played.
“There was plays made on both sides of the ball,” the coach said. “Overall, I did like the effort and there was a lot of good hits out here too. I like the physicalness of our football team.”
Senior quarterback Sefo Liufau was average on the day. He hit some good throws but missed others, including a deep ball that was intercepted by Ahkello Witherspoon. MacIntyre felt it was a great play by Witherspoon and was encouraged to see the senior make that play.
Backup quarterback Steven Montez tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brian Boatman in a goal-line situation. Gehrke had the two big plays of the day. In addition to the deep touchdown pass to Julmisse, he had a 50-yard touchdown pass to Kabion Ento.
The Buffs have worked hard on their goal-line situations, and MacIntyre was pleased to see running backs Phillip Lindsay and Donovan Lee score touchdowns in those situations.
The defense had its moments too, including a couple of stops in goal-line and other situations.
“I thought the defense stepped up and made some plays in some different areas,” MacIntyre said.
Late in the scrimmage, Montez, who is projected to be the top backup at quarterback, left the field with what appeared to be a left ankle injury.
CU trainers wrapped Montez’s left ankle and he did not return. MacIntyre said there does not appear to be any concern about it.
