A 14-year-old boy was shot in the back Wednesday night in Grand Junction, and police say they have arrested another teen in the case.

Officer David Keech said a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody and is suspected of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, prohibited use of a weapon and being a minor in possession of alcohol.

The shooting was reported to police about 6:45 p.m. at a home in the Orchard Mesa part of the city. First responders found the injured boy, who was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital.

“His wounds are not believed to be life-threatening,” Keech said.

Investigators say they are trying to determine exactly what led up to the shooting. Keech said he believes an adult was nearby but could not elaborate.

“We’re not sure,” Keech explained of the events leading up the shooting. “We’re still trying to get everything together at the moment. There were several juveniles in the house.”
