A 59-year-old man was arrested early Saturday after allegedly pointing a handgun at sheriff’s deputies in Elbert County who were investigating a report that he had been driving drunk, authorities say.

James Littrell was taken into custody at a home on the 5000 block of Dove Creek Drive in Elizabeth about 4:15 a.m. after a standoff that lasted several hours and ended with a SWAT response.

About 1 a.m., Elbert County deputies were dispatched to a report of a drunken driver heading southbound on County Road 21, the county sheriff’s office says. A license plate description led authorities to a home where law enforcement encountered Littrell, according to authorities, who was identified as the possible drunken driver.

“Littrell pointed a handgun at deputies as he disobeyed verbal commands and ran inside the house,” the sheriff’s office said. “Deputies set up a perimeter, with the assistance of (the) Douglas County (Sheriff’s Office), and called for Elbert County SWAT as the suspect was armed and barricaded.”

SWAT officers made numerous announcements to Littrell, officials said, before eventually making entry into the home and arrested him.

No injuries were reported, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office says.
