Teresa Keegan’s points have needed to be said for a long time. Arbitrarily making a college degree a condition of job eligibility, when such degree does not even pertain to what the job entails, penalizes both young and old.
I have seen highly capable and talented mid-life adults put family lives (and members) on hold for years, saddle themselves with huge loan debt, and miss valuable earning and on-the-job learning opportunities in their quest for the college degree and the benefits they have been promised it will bring. The benefits of that degree are another topic!
Nothing will be able to stop hiring review committees from favoring degreed job applicants, but to eliminate those without degrees from any consideration reveals prejudice, which although socially acceptable is prejudice just the same.
