A man was rescued from the backcountry near Aspen after falling about 40 feet while climbing a mountain peak, authorities say.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office says they were notified late Wednesday of the injured man by two passing hikers who activated a locator device and summoned rescuers.

The injured hiker had injuries to multiple bones and required immediate transport, the sheriff’s office said.

Using members from Mountain Rescue Aspen, a helicopter from Flight for Life and a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from the Colorado Army National Guard’s High Altitude Aviation Training Site, rescue personnel found the injured man on Snowmass Peak by using the locator device’s GPS coordinates.

The injured climber was extricated from the backcountry and taken to paramedics with Aspen Ambulance at the Aspen Airport before being moved to Aspen Valley Hospital.

All rescue personnel were safely out of the field by 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

An update on the injured hiker’s condition, and his name and hometown, were not released.
