Three recent fires in Castle Rock appear to be intentionally set, and investigators are asking the public to call 911 to report suspicious behavior at or around fires.
A fire broke out Friday morning near Oman Road and Gilbert Street, on the south end of the city close to Memmen Ridge Open Space, according to a Castle Rock media release.
Firefighters contained the fire to about a half-acre before it reached and damaged and nearby structures.
The cause of the Friday fire is under investigation, but arson is suspected. A lighter was found near the source of the fire.
“Today’s fire came within feet of potentially causing a significant wildland fire that could have caused damage to homes,” Castle Rock Fire Chief Art Morales said in a media release.
Two other recent fires are also suspicious in regard to the cause.
“Initial information indicates these could have been intentionally set,” the release said. Firefighters ask residents to be vigilant and to “call 911 if they see any suspicious behavior regarding fire starting.”
Windy, dry and unseasonably warm weather along the Front Range has increased fire danger.
The public is asked to be extremely careful with anything capable of producing a spark and a potential fire.
