Boulder’s Liquor Mart has sold its real estate holdings to W.W. Reynold’s company for a reported $9 million but will maintain its operations at the same downtown location.

“We will continue to run the company and we look forward to serving the community,” said General Manager Cardene Otsuka.

The store, which has been operating in Boulder since 1968, has a prominent ownership group which includes Bob Charles and former University of Colorado Athletic Director Dick Tharp. Otsuka said the owners have entered into a long-term lease with the Reynolds company.

The roughly 30,000 square-foot-store, at 1750 15th St., has been a mainstay in downtown Boulder located between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe Avenue near Boulder Creek and just blocks from the University of Colorado campus.

According to local lore and a store history on Liquor Mart’s web site, CU graduate Tom Lacey was the first to win a liquor license when Boulder “went wet” in 1968. He grew the store quickly and ultimately moved it to its current location. After Lacey died in a plane crash in 1981, it was acquired by the current owners in 1982.
