Re: Oct. 17 endorsement.
Your support for Denver ballot measures 3A and 3B begs the question: What would Denver Public Schools know about helping students succeed? The average ACT score in the district is 18.6, up from 18.3 last year. The median ACT score for incoming freshmen at CU Boulder is 28. At this rate it will take DPS 31 years to meet the average standards of our state’s flagship university.
No one should take the districtap word that more money will improve educational outcomes. This is the equivalent of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
Instead of wasting more taxpayer dollars on district-controlled programs, why not pass a voucher bill for kids in at-risk schools and open it to private competition? Parents could choose what they want, pay these vendors directly, and instructors would come to the schools to teach classes.
Until more choice and competition are available to Denver parents, I will vote “no” on any new funding.
