Bravo to the student newspaper staff at Palmer Ridge High School and their adviser, Tom Patrick, for being educated and knowing their rights under Colorado law. The ability to endorse any candidate they decide as a newspaper staff is well within their rights, as specified in the Colorado Student Freedom of Expression Law, enacted by the legislature in 1990 (Senate Bill 99). Newspapers, even student ones, are set up to allow a forum for the free exchange of information. Those who don’t agree with what is printed have every right to participate in that free exchange by writing a letter to the editor of the publication. Perhaps this is a case where the students can (and should!) go home and educate their parents.
