A 39-year-old man hanged himself last week in his cell at a southwestern Colorado jail.
Johnathan Kirk Rutherford was found on Oct. 19 hanging in his cell at the Rio Grande County jail in Del Norte. Sheriff Brian Norton said efforts to resuscitate Rutherford were initiated in the moments after a deputy on a routine check found him.
Rutherford was rushed to Del Norte Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Norton told The Denver Post on Monday that Rutherford was being held on warrants, but declined to elaborate on what they were for. Norton also would not say how long Rutherford had been in the jail, only that he had not appeared before a judge.
Rutherford was in his cell alone when he hanged himself, authorities say.
