Amber Timmons, a transgender woman, recently found anti-transgender graffiti covering her SUV. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups and hate crime nationally, said it had received 701 reports of hateful intimidation and harassment between Nov. 9 and Nov. 16. Ten of those originated in Colorado, according to the organization.

Re: “” Nov. 24 letter to the editor.

A letter-writer last week stated thatrude comments and spray painting are hardly hate crimes. The author implied The Denver Post was biased in itsreporting based on not giving broader coverage to the bombing of a Trump campaign office as a hate crime as well.

The author misunderstands a key element of hate crimes.

A hate crime is not determined by the action, but the emotional response it is intended to elicit in its victim.

While the trashingof a campaign office is reprehensible, Trump probably did not feel threatened.

Compare that to a Jew or gay person seeing a swastika on their church. Or our president-elect saying athis rallies, when addressing the treatment of those who might disagree with him, “Punch him in the face.”

Possibly those who have not walked in other’s shoes should not presume to know the fears that color their world.
