A man accidentally shot his 19-year-old girlfriend early Monday in Colorado Springs while handling a handgun, police say.

Investigators were called out about 1 a.m. to Memorial Hospital on reports of a shooting where they met with the teen victim, who had a non-life threatening wound. She said she had been shot near the area of 21st Street and Bott Avenue.

The woman told police her 22-year-old boyfriend, Joseph Hettle, accidentally shot her while handling a handgun at her apartment on the 2300 block of Skyview Lane, police say.

Hettle was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and booked without incident into the El Paso County jail, authorities said.
