St. Patrick Presbyterian Church Pastor Michael Mathews put a lot of effort into trying to get Ballot Issue 3A passed for Greeley-Evans School District 6.
So did many others, but Mathews was also on the Citizens Advisory Committee that formally recommended a tax increase to fund schools. He had skin in the game, but he also knows many others do as well.
Wednesday, Mathews had teachers and administrators at Shawsheen Elementary School gather in the library. They figured Mathews, whose church sends tutors to the school every Wednesday as part of Kids Hope, was there to thank them for something. Thatap what he told them.
Pastors, however, may be allowed the occasional white lie.
“We spent all this time, energy and money (on 3A), and I was concerned folks would feel discouraged (after it failed),” Mathews said.
So Mathews and 25 others from the St. Patrick congregation decided to donate what they would have paid in extra property taxes under the ballot measure and give it to the school, Mathews said.
