Thornton police Sunday night were cleaning up a nearly head-on crash that killed a father and sent his son to the hospital with injuries, caused when a northbound vehicle veered into southbound lanes near 156th Avenue and York Street and smashed into the southbound vehicle.

Police took a woman who was driving the northbound vehicle into custody, and also to the hospital for treatment, Thornton Police Sgt. Matt Cabot said.

“It was a really bad accident,” Cabot said. “Alcohol is suspected.”

The vehicle the woman was driving drifted to the right, glanced off a guard rail and crossed into southbound lanes, hitting the vehicle carrying the father and son, Cabot said.

Police received a call around 6:02 p.m. and raced to the scene. York Street reopened around 11:30 p.m. after police had closed it following the accident.

Cabot said icy roads were not considered a factor in the crash.
