Four young children were rushed to a hospital after being struck by a vehicle Thursday morning in Colorado Springs near their elementary school, according to authorities, leaving one child critically hurt.
Police and city officials say the collision happened just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Pikes Peak Avenue and Chelton Road, where the children were crossing the street near where James Monroe Elementary School sits. The Colorado Springs School District 11 says the children are students there.

Devra Ashby, a district spokeswoman, said the children include one kindergartner, a 1st grader, a 2nd grader and a 5th grader. Three are siblings and the fourth is a cousin.
“The second grader is in critical,” Ashby said, “but I do not know the conditions of the others.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with the four children who were hit by a car this morning at Pikes Peak and Chelton and their families.

Police closed down the intersection because of the “serious” crash. A spokesman for the Colorado Springs Police Department did not immediately return Denver Post messages seeking comment.
In a news release, police said no arrests have been made, but an investigation into the case is ongoing.
“All kids were conscious and crying, which is a good sign,” Lt. Howard Black, the spokesman, .
The newspaper reports witnesses say a crossing guard had stopped traffic to let the children cross at the crosswalk when a silver car made a right turn from Pikes Peak Avenue onto Chelton Road, hitting the kids and trapping them under the vehicle.
