Fremont County detective placed on leave after 2006 murder evidence found in his storage unit

Family of Candace Hiltz plans to consult attorney about suing sheriff’s office for mishandling the case

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has placed Lt. Detective Robert Dodd on routine administrative leave after .

The evidence, which included a bloody rope, an ax and boxes of paperwork, was discovered by Rick Ratzlaff of Cañon City after he purchased the storage unit at a December auction.

Candace Hiltz, who was 17, was found dead Aug. 15, 2006, in a family home in the Copper Gulch area. According to Daily Record articles at the time of the murder, Hiltz suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Hiltz’ brother, Casey, reached out to the Daily Record and said that although it was good Dodd was put on leave, the detective should’ve been fired. Hiltz also said the ax and rope weren’t used in his sister’s murder and that the family plans to meet with an attorney this week to pursue filing a lawsuit against the sheriff’s office for mishandling his sister’s case.

Sheriff Jim Beicker refused to answer questions about the case Monday and said it has been turned over to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations.
