Re: “” Jan. 14 sports story.
Your front-page article on Fran Belibi, the Regis Jesuit sophomore with newfound basketball skills, was an unexpected treat for a Sunday morning. Much to my delight, you focused not only on her ability to dunk a basketball — an unheard-of skill in a female high-schooler — but also on her efforts to learn the sport while recognizing the powerful influence she may have on promoting girls and women’s basketball.
Kudos to her parents, immigrants from Cameroon, for instilling in their talented daughter the importance of “perseverance and excellence” and prioritizing education as a non-negotiable element in the overall picture. Encouraging anyone to pursue their talents is valuable, but when it’s girls who are encouraged, it’s priceless.
