Having read through the entire of last Sunday’s Denver Post, I believe it is time to stop presenting anecdotal heartwarming or heartrending stories as arguments for what should be done to repair our immigration policies and start working on comprehensive legislative solutions.
Sen. and Congressman , as examples from their essays, are so close to agreement on the legislative solutions that it should be possible in short order, if properly motivated, for Congress to reach a bipartisan compromise on the legislation.
We cannot hope that the end solutions will make everyone happy with the results, but that is always the reality for any final public policies, no matter how well-crafted are the compromises. Now is the time to get something done, so take it on and get it done. To me the immigration situation for the United States is as if our country, on all the sides of this issue, has been beating itself on the head with a hammer for decades. As a motivator for moving forward, imagine how good it will feel when that stops.

Re: Jan. 14 guest commentary.
I find it interesting that Tom Tancredo, at the conclusion of his piece, anticipates that those who disagree with him will respond with hysterical name calling, yet he concludes by name calling those who disagree with him by saying, “Suck it up, buttercup.” The word to describe this is hypocrisy. I would expect a much more constructive tone from a former member of congress.

Tom Tancredo makes a good argument for making E-Verify program mandatory. He recommends using an existing program which could have a noticeable effect on illegal immigration. Although I generally disagree with him, I was impressed with his thinking. However, in his last paragraph, he sinks into the vindictive, condescending, and ugly name-calling and rhetoric that we are seeing way too much of these days. To me, this clouds his earlier comments.

Last week’s Perspective section was excellent. Immigration is a timely and appropriate focus and well worth the emphasis The Post put into it. You featured a good variety of helpful opinion pieces on the topic.
