Letter-writer Peter Bruno is accurate in stating that in 1965, “the Southern states which fought against integration were led by Democrats.” But since the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Acts were passed in 1964 and 1965, things have changed. Richard Nixon’s Southern strategy to appeal to the racists of the South has worked. The South is now solidly Republican and the Republicans vote to curtail voting rights, oppose affirmative action and oppose the civil rights of other groups. The cartoon in question depicts Republican Donald Trump as the modern standard bearer of the bullying racist tactics abundant in 1965 Selma. Given his campaign rhetoric, I’d say it is pretty accurate.
