An off-duty Colorado State Patrol trooper is suspected of running a stop sign Sunday night that caused a Fort Collins car wreck that seriously hurt four people.

Police say the collision happened about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Giddings and Richard Lake roads. The trooper was driving his personal vehicle, a 2016 Toyota Camry, east on Richards Lake when he failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a 2017 Buick Enclave northbound on Giddings.

The Enclave’s driver and his front passenger were were taken to Poudre Valley Hospital with serious injuries.

The trooper and his juvenile passenger were both taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies with serious injuries.

A Fort Collins police spokeswoman said she did not have detailed information Monday on the condition of the four people. No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.

The 8th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the crash because of the trooper’s involvement. Once a review of the wreck is complete, prosecutors will evaluate the findings and decide how to move forward.

Police say they do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. No names have been released.
