Three people were injured early Saturday morning when a suspected drunken driver crashed into the back of a Colorado State Patrol vehicle, injuring the trooper inside and two people in the car he had pulled over, according to the agency.

The trooper pulled over a blue Saturn Outlook on Interstate 70 near Watkins shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. The Saturn driver — who was driving in the left lane without passing other cars — stopped for the trooper in the left lane, and the trooper told her to move onto the shoulder, according to the agency.

As the two were parking on the shoulder, a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee crashed into the back of the trooper’s patrol vehicle, pushing it forward into the Saturn, state patrol officials said.

Paramedics took the trooper and two people inside the Saturn, a teenage girl and a 44-year-old woman who were not publicly identified, to the hospital, according to the agency. All three were released from the hospital later that morning.

The Jeep driver, a 47-year-old woman from Byers, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, state patrol officials said.
