
Three dogs, in two separate incidents, were attacked by a mountain lion in the Evergreen area of Jefferson County this past week, including a fatal incident.
The first attack happened at about 6 p.m. Jan. 23 on Snowshoe Road, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The dog’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Another attack took place at about 7 p.m. a day later in the 6900 block of Lynx Lair Road. Two dogs were attacked, and one was killed. The surviving dog has been given a rabies booster and is on a 45-day observation and assessment.
Mountain lions are part of the wildlife habitat of Jefferson County, as well as other metro counties, and residents should , including, not leaving pets and children alone or unattended outdoors.
Other safety tips include:
- Mountain lions are most active around dusk and dawn; residents should be most attentive at these times.
- Closely supervise children whenever they’re outdoors.
- Keep pets under control and bring them indoors at night.
- Pets left outdoors overnight should be kept in a safe pen or kennel, with a secure top.
- Feeding pets outside attracts raccoons, other animals and lions. Avoid outdoor feedings.
- Livestock should be securely penned at night.
