Denver’s status as a sexed-up city in a recent survey has made it a target for population growth control activists who, on Valentine’s Day, plan to distribute bright wildlife condoms in packages featuring imperiled species.
The Center for Biological Diversity activists say they want to draw attention to how, as the planet’s human population exploded after 1950, wildlife populations shrunk by half. United Nations officials estimate that, by 2050, the world’s population will reach 9.7 billion and the U.S. population 389 million.
“Lots of couples will get lucky this Valentine’s Day, but wildlife and the environment will be far less fortunate in our increasingly crowded world,” said CBD “Safe Sex Saves Wildlife” campaign coordinator Leigh Moyer.
The condoms are wrapped in packages featuring wildlife including polar bears, monarch butterflies, sea otters, horned lizards and whooping cranes.
“The habitat loss, resource depletion and climate change that come with rapid human population growth make it next to impossible for biodiversity to thrive,” she said. “Itap important to bring population growth back into the environmental conversation.”

in the U.S., after Austin and Dallas, Texas, Columbus, Ohio, and Durham, N.C. The ranking was based on condom sales, and birth and sexually transmitted disease rates.
Volunteers for the Center for Biological Diversity are working in those and other cities, planning to hand out 40,000 condoms during events at zoos, museums and breweries.
