A 40-year-old man sleeping inside his vehicle in Cañon City was set on fire and critically hurt early Sunday, authorities say.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says Jason Crowder was severely burned at about 3 a.m. on the 1600 block of Park Avenue. A caller told investigators that Crowder’s vehicle, in which he had been living, was “fully engulfed in flames.”

Crowder was flown to a burn center for treatment. An update on his condition Monday was not released.

Crowder told the sheriff’s office that 34-year-old Michael Scarvada, of Cañon City, set him ablaze, deputies say.

Scavarda was arrested without incident. He was taken to the Fremont County jail where he is being held without bail on suspicion of first-degree assault, fourth-degree arson, first-degree burglary and reckless endangerment.

The sheriff’s office has not released further information on the case, including a suspected motive, and says their investigation is ongoing.
