Clouds and cool temperatures, with a chance of rain, are forecast for Denver on Sunday, foreshadowing weather expected to stick around in the city throughout the week.

The National Weather Service in Boulder says temperatures should top out near 53 degrees with winds gusting up to 17 mph under mostly cloudy skies.

There is a 40 percent chance of rain showers in Denver before 3 p.m. Sunday then a 10 percent chance of rain before 8 p.m.

In the high country, the weather service is calling for a few inches of snow. Colorado Department of Transportation cameras in the mountains showed wet roads and traction laws were enacted for some areas.

“This system will bring some snow to the mountains, with a few additional inches of accumulation this morning,” the weather service said in a forecast bulletin. “At lower elevations, there will be a chance of rain showers through the afternoon. By tonight the system will move east of the area with showers ending in the early evening hours.”

A chance of rain is forecast in Denver for every day this week, with temperatures hovering around 55 degrees. The greatest chance for showers is on Tuesday into Wednesday, when the weather service says there is a 70 percent chance of rain.

“An active storm track across the central Rocky Mountain region promises to produce periods of precipitation and considerable cloud cover for the outlook area through next weekend,” the forecast bulletin said. “The high country is expected to see rain and snow Tuesday and Wednesday, with rain showers at lower elevations.”

The weather service says a second storm system slated to pass over the region later in the week is expected to produce another round of rain and snow for the mountains and high valleys “and beneficial rainfall for lower elevations.”

“Temperatures this week should remain too warm for snow in areas below 6,000 feet,” the bulletin said. “Whereas higher mountain areas could receive significant snow accumulation. High country travelers should plan accordingly.”
