A strong spring storm rolled into Colorado on Tuesday, bringing cloudy skies, cold weather and rain to the Front Range with snow in the mountains.
Snow with freezing temperatures, visibility of about one-quarter mile and a lack of traction resulted in accidents on I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel about 3 p.m. That closed the highway in both directions, eastbound at Silverthorne and westbound at the tunnel, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Eastbound lanes reopened at about 4:40 p.m., CDOT said. The westbound lanes reopened at about 3:50 p.m.
In Denver, morning drizzle turned into rain Tuesday afternoon, as the high temperature topped out at 47 degrees.
The rain will turn to slush and snow early Wednesday morning starting around 2 a.m., the weather service says. The low temperature overnight is expected to drop to about 34 degrees.
In Colorado’s high country, snow is expected to fall throughout the week.
In the Denver area, the chance for precipitation climbs to 90 percent Wednesday. Up to a half-inch of wet snow is possible in the metro area. The high temperature Wednesday is expected to be 49 degrees.
Wednesday night will turn blustery with wind gusts up to 23 mph and temperatures hovering just under the freezing mark.
Thursday should provide a springlike respite with sunshine and a high of about 62 degrees.
Rain returns Friday with a high 56 degrees.
The rain should continue to fall Saturday — April 1 — with a high temperature of 47 degrees expected, the weather service says.
Sunny skies are expected Sunday and Monday with highs around 60 degrees both days.
