Enjoy the sunshine and blue skies that mark the beginning of the week in Denver on Sunday. By Monday evening, rain and snow will take its place, with 3 to 5 inches piling up throughout the metro area.
The early April snowfall follows a March that tied with the same month in two other years, 1995 and 2012, for the least snow on record.
“Monday night through Tuesday we’re looking at a chance of rain and snow, with up to 5 inches possible on Wednesday,” said Natalie Sullivan, National Weather Service meteorologist.
The temperature is expected to reach a high of 62 degrees Sunday, dip to 54 degrees Monday, and fall to 32 degrees Tuesday.
The sun will be back Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures are expected to be in the low 50s.
Denver also set a seasonal snowfall low through March with just 19.3 inches so far this season, according to the weather service. The previous low record in Denver through March 31 was in 1884-85, when 19.9 inches was recorded.
In the high country there is a chance of rain and snow Sunday afternoon, with accumulations of up to 2 inches, and an additional 2 to 4 inches Monday.
Tuesday will bring as much as 6 more inches on Wednesday to the mountains.
“There’s definitely higher amounts of snow likely for areas closer to the mountains and higher elevations. This system should be moving out by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning,” Sullivan said.
