No. 7 Mountain Vista used a big fifth inning to beat No. 5 Rock Canyon 5-2 in Continental League play on Friday evening at Metro State.

The Jaguars (9-3, 1-2) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first and were able to take a 2-0 lead out of it, but from there junior lefty Jack Liffrig settled in for the Golden Eagles (7-3, 1-2) en route to the complete game win.

Junior Wyatt Wendell pitched well in four and 2/3 innings for Rock Canyon, but junior shortstop Zach Paschke’s solo home run in the fifth — followed by a sacrifice-fly RBI from sophomore catcher Grant Magill and a two-run double from senior designated hitter Alex Clouthier — erased a 2-1 deficit and gave Mountain Vista an advantage it did not relinquish.

Rock Canyon is back in action on Monday at home against No. 1 Legend, while Mountain Vista takes on rival ThunderRidge on the road that same afternoon.
