Re: “” April 15 news story.

The senseless, preventable harm that children of Kit Carson County experience while under the supervision of county authorities is unforgivable. The severity of the damage by previous child welfare director Kindra Mulch and her staff may never be known. It is sickening that Mulch was allowed to retire on the taxpayers’ dime. Her shameful excuse, that she did not know the law, is inexcusable. It is basic knowledge to report any child abuse to law enforcement, especially when your job title is director of child welfare. She clearly prioritized the protection her staff over her authority to protect the vulnerable children of her county.

The state of Colorado must improve oversight of child protection programs. I hope Kit Carson County’s new child welfare director, Katie Kirby, understands the gravity of her position and the duty to serve the children of her county.
