Re: Aug. 11 Mario Nicolais column.

I applaud Mario Nicolais for his articulate and heartfelt open letter to former First Lady Michelle Obama. Obama reminds me of one of my recently passed father’s favorite sayings: “It’s easy to captain a boat in calm seas.” Her unwavering class and grace during “calm seas” and “rough seas” has been a source of admiration to many, including myself. She is an amazing role model for us all, especially our children and grandchildren who instinctively know character when they see it.

I want to join Nicolais and “stand by the women in my life” and also stand alongside any other women the world threatens to cut.
