I thank the Denver Post for calling to end political gerrymandering and for acknowledging the Colorado League of Women Voters in leading this call. The League of Women Voters, perhaps the best informed group of voters anywhere, has been calling for this all over the US for many years.
The recommendations on this initiative reported by the Post are good, but two things would make it better. First, if spatial compactness would have more influence than, say, county boundaries, that would limit the number of options to be considered, thus reducing political influence costs. There are, after all, only a few district configurations that are maximally compact.
Second, there is no good reason why the Reapportionment Commission should not also draw U.S. House districts in Colorado. Changing how Colorado redistricts is more urgent now as Colorado will surely gain an eighth U.S. House seat after Census 2020.
