A climber died Thursday after falling from the First Flatiron, the second person to have died while climbing the iconic Boulder landmark this year.
The fall was reported at 1:08 p.m. Thursday by a witness, Boulder County sheriff’s spokeswoman Carrie Haverfield said. Shortly after 2 p.m., rescue crews confirmed the climber had died and said the Boulder County Coroner’s Office was responding.
Crews had to traverse a 1-mile hike to get to the climber, who has not yet been identified.
Officials did not yet have any information about how far the climber fell or what the person was doing before falling. Initial police reports indicate the witness believed the climber fell about 1,000 feet from the top of the First Flatiron.
A 17-year-old man died in August while free-soloing the First Flatiron. Before that, there had been no fatal accidental falls on the Flatirons since 2008.
