Wind roaring through the Front Range mountains and foothills knocked over at least two semitrailers Wednesday morning but metro area residents can expect a pleasant day with unseasonably warm temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
The metro area could have gusts up to 50 mph, but a mild, partly cloudy day with temperatures in the low 70s is expected overall.
The unseasonably warm weather should continue at least through Sunday throughout the state, NWS meteorologist Russell Danielson said. “We will have a string of dry weather in the metro area at least through the weekend and relatively high temperatures for this time of year throughout the state.”
Wind blasts should taper off in the afternoon Wednesday though a high wind warning remains in effect until midnight.
The jet stream “coming by has very high winds and obviously it is very high aloft, so it just gets the higher elevations,” Danielson said.
Wind blasts of more than 70 mph were recorded by Colorado Department of Transportation weather gauges near Interstate 70 in Georgetown where the two trucks blew over at about 3 a.m.
CDOT issued a high wind restriction for high-profile and empty-load vehicles on I-70 between the Eisenhower Tunnel and Idaho Springs. Clear Creek School District canceled classes for the day because it could not send buses to drive children to schools.
