In response to Chris Gates’ guest commentary on estate tax repeal’s effects on charitable giving, it’s interesting to me how people feel entitled to spend other people’s money. Gates posits that “The estate tax is not a burden.” Not a burden to whom? Him or the ones paying it? The ultra-wealthy didn’t all get there by inheritance, which, by the way, someone in their family earned.
The American thought process seems to be moving towards “We want you to succeed, but if you really succeed, we want to take it from you.” The wealthy, who likely worked hard, took risk and had some luck along the way, already pay a lot of taxes and don’t deserve the death tax on top of that.
